A General Assembly of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences During the COVID-19 Pandemic

A general assembly of the members of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences was held on 22 September 2020.  For the first time after the introduction of pandemic restrictions, some of full members and members emeriti attended the event in the large conference hall while others participated in the assembly online.
One of the important parts of this meeting was the introduction and election of foreign members of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Prof. Domas Kaunas, chair of the Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences, introduced Prof. Robert James Shiller, an American economist and a winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in economics. This prominent scientist cooperates with the Bank of Lithuania and is often called the fosterer of economic promotion in Lithuania. In 2020, Prof. R. J. Shiller was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit for Lithuania.
Gintautas Žintelis, chair of the Division of Technical Sciences, introduced Prof. Jinde Cao from the People’s Republic of China, who works in the fields of engineering, IT, and mathematics. Jinde Cao is a world-renown researcher of neuron networks and neurodynamic systems who for over ten years has collaborated with Lithuanian scientists, funded their visits to China, and assisted in organising international conferences.
Electronic voting results and the resolution of the General Assembly on the foreign members of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences based on the report of the chair of vote counting commission were announced at the end of the assembly. Prof. Robert J. Shiller and Prof. Jinde Cao were elected foreign members of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.
