10 07 2025

The Lithuanian Academy of Sciences continues its active international cooperation by strengthening its ties with the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. In 2024, a bilateral scientific cooperation agreement was signed with the aim of promoting partnerships of scientists from both countries, joint research, and academic exchanges. The launch of this cooperation was symbolically marked by a virtual conference, which discussed directions for cooperation between the Lithuanian and Moldovan academies of sciences and opportunities for development. The visit of Prof. Ion Tighineanu, President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, to Lithuania was an important step in the direction of closer relations. During this visit, he visited the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and other Lithuanian research and study institutions, familiarised himself with their activities and academic community.

At the end of June, Prof. Jūras Banys, President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, visited Chișinău, where he was inaugurated as an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and took part in other events and meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.

In his congratulatory speech, Prof. Tighineanu expressed his delight at the success of close cooperation between the Lithuanian and Moldovan academies of sciences and emphasised that it was a great honour for him to present the regalia of the honorary member to Prof. Jūras Banys.

After the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Banys gave a lecture on ferroelectrics – advanced materials that open up new possibilities for modern science and engineering.

Not only the representatives of the Moldovan academic community, but also talented young people interested in research – the future generation of scientists – attended this event.

In the evening, Prof. Banys attended a reception hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the Republic of Moldova to commemorate the upcoming 6 July – Statehood Day (the coronation of King Mindaugas of Lithuania) and National Anthem Day.
