Conference on Rare Liver diseases

03 02 2026

On 30 January 2026, the Division of Biological, Medical, and Geosciences of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, together with the Lithuanian Society of Gastroenterologists, the European Reference Network for Rare Liver Diseases (ERN R-Liver), and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, organised the conference ‘Rare Liver Diseases: Innovations in Diagnosis and Treatment’ in Kaunas.

Prof. Ansgar Lohse (Hamburg) giving a lecture

In his opening address, Academician Prof. Limas Kupčinskas, chair of the Division of Biological, Medical, and Geosciences, noted that with the purpose to improve diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases, the European Commission has established 24 European Reference Networks (ERNs). Lithuanian university hospitals – Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos and Kauno Klinikos Hospital of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences – operate 17 centres across various medical fields that are full members of these networks. The ERN R-Liver network brings together 53 university hospitals from across Europe, and the Gastroenterology Clinic of Kauno Klinikos is the only full member of this network in the Baltic countries. As rare liver diseases are primarily genetic and autoimmune in nature, the aim of the conference was to present the latest fundamental scientific advances in their diagnosis and treatment.

Prof. Ansgar Lohse and Prof. Juozas Kupčinskas, an alumnus of the Young Academy, the vice-rector for science of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

The guest of the conference Professor Ansgar Lohse (Hamburg), head of the European Reference Network for Rare Liver Diseases, delivered a presentation on innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune liver diseases. Prof. Limas Kupčinskas gave a lecture on immunoglobulin G4-related diseases. Other presentations addressed genetic liver disorders, including haemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease, lysosomal acid lipase (LAL) deficiency, and other conditions. Further scientific cooperation was discussed together with Professor Ansgar Lohse.
