A Meeting between the President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and the Ambassador of Israel: Focus on Scientific Collaboration

Shelly Hugler Livne, H.E. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Israel to Lithuania, visited the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LMA, Lietuvos mokslų akademija) today. The meeting was attended by Prof. Vytautas Nekrošius, President of the LMA, and Presidium members academicians Jūras Banys and Juozas Augutis.

During the meeting, President Vytautas Nekrošius expressed his delight at the excellent and warm relations between the LMA and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, which were formalised by a memorandum of cooperation signed a decade ago, and recalled the international conference on the Jewish intellectual heritage of Vilnius, which was jointly organised in October 2023. Prof. Vytautas Nekrošius expressed regret that due to the terrorist attack of 7 October 2023, many speakers from Israel were unable to attend this important event in person, yet they successfully joined in and shared their insights remotely. The academies of sciences of both countries have long enjoyed close ties, which, despite the challenges that arise, are expected to be nurtured in the future, with plans to jointly organise many more meaningful and relevant events.

Ambassador S. H. Livne and President of the LMA Vytautas Nekrošius discussed opportunities to expand institutional cooperation through the implementation of further initiatives and to strengthen ties with Israeli scientists.

The participants in the meeting expressed hope that peace and tranquillity would return to the homes of all the people of Israel as soon as possible and that any emerging problems would be resolved through the rule of law, agreements, and diplomacy rather than through military or terrorist actions.
