On 21 September, at an online meeting, the International Advisory Board of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (Lietuvos mokslų akademija, LMA) unanimously elected its chair – Prof. Dr habil. Marek Konarzewski. With this decision, the board officially began its work.
Nominated by Prof. Vytautas Nekrošius, president of the LMA, the composition of the bard had been approved a month earlier, on 25 August, at a meeting of the LMA Presidium. The board is made up of eleven internationally recognised scholars from a range of fields:
Prof. Nekrošius opened the meeting by thanking the members for accepting the invitation to join the International Advisory Board and for dedicating their time to its work. He noted that this was the first time such a board had been convened at the LMA and was hopeful that the initiative would only grow in the years to come.
The President nominated his colleague – Prof. Dr habil. Marek Konarzewski, president of the Polish Academy of Sciences – the chair of the board. He emphasised Konarzewski’s extensive experience, his readiness to offer advice, and the importance of the Polish Academy of Sciences as a neighbouring partner institution.
Prof. Konarzewski accepted the nomination and assured the members he would make board meetings productive and fruitful for the LMA. The board members agreed unanimously, and Prof. Konarzewski was elected chair of the board.
Prof. Chennupati Jagadish, a physicist and former president of the Australian Academy of Science, was named vice-chair of the board.
Closing the session, President Prof. Vytautas Nekrošius noted that the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences would prepare a letter setting out proposals for future work, which the board would discuss in the autumn, and invited the members to visit Vilnius for an in-person meeting within approximately one year.
