30 09 2026 ALLEA and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Respond to russian Aggression

On 28 September, a russian drone struck the building housing the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the centre of Kyiv. According to figures released by the Academy, two people were killed, and the building was severely damaged. In response to the attack, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA) issued statements condemning the aggression and calling on the international scientific community to stand united.

ALLEA strongly condemns the attack and expresses its solidarity with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, its staff, and scientists. The Federation emphasises that science, research, and education cannot be legitimate targets for attack, either in times of war or in any other circumstances. Destruction of scientific institutions undermines society’s ability to understand, adapt, and rebuild. ALLEA calls on the international community, the European institutions, and partners in the global scientific community to unequivocally condemn such attacks and reaffirms its continued support. Full statement by ALLEA.

In its statement, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine emphasises that this is a blow to the people, to science, and to the country’s intellectual potential. The Academy calls on the international scientific community not to resume or legitimise institutional cooperation with russian state scientific and educational bodies whilst russia continues its aggressive war against Ukraine. Despite the losses and destruction it has suffered, the Academy is determined to continue its research and contribute to Ukraine’s defence, reconstruction, development and European future.
