A World of Discovery: The Best of Lithuanian Science

07 10 2026 A World of Discovery: The Best of Lithuanian Science

To showcase Lithuanian science, research, and innovation to an international audience, the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (Lietuvos mokslų akademija, LMA) and the Research Council of Lithuania (Lietuvos mokslo taryba, LMT) have released a new publication, Science and Research Lithuania. It aims to highlight the strengths of the Lithuanian research system, the achievements of scientists, opportunities for international collaboration, and the country’s research potential. The publication offers an overview of the Lithuanian research infrastructure, highlights key areas of scientific research, introduces universities, research institutes, science and technology valleys, and provides information on research funding opportunities and international partnerships. Lithuanian science unfolds as a dynamic part of the European Research Area, in which internationalisation, innovation, and collaboration are of central importance.

One of the main accents of this publication is the international dimension of Lithuanian science. It outlines Lithuania’s participation in international scientific organisations, including the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), and the European Laser Research Infrastructure Consortium (ELI ERIC). Lithuania’s opportunities to participate in the Horizon Europe programme and international research projects are also discussed. Considerable attention is focused on the strengths of Lithuanian science: research achievements in lasers and photonics, the life sciences, biomedicine, information and communication technologies, advanced materials, environmental research, and the social sciences and humanities. Science and Research Lithuania gives an overview of the activities of integrated science, research and business centres – science and technology valleys.

The publication also includes success stories of specific Lithuanian scientists and researchers. One of these stories focuses on a group of researchers at Vilnius University Life Sciences Center led by Prof. Virginijus Šikšnys, their research into genome editing, and the significance of CRISPR-Cas9 technology for medicine and biotechnology. Other success stories highlight the opportunities available to Lithuanian researchers through international research infrastructures, European Research Council projects, and international centres of excellence. A significant part of the publication addresses research funding and international cooperation. This overview covers the funding schemes offered by the LMT, opportunities for early-career researchers to become involved in research activities, funding for doctoral and post-doctoral studies, and researcher mobility. The Lithuanian Academy of Sciences is introduced as a national institution that brings together the scientific community, acts as an expert body, and strengthens the dialogue between science and society.

Foreign scientists, researchers, academic institutions, potential partners, and anyone interested in the landscapeof Lithuanian science and innovation are the target readership of Science and Research Lithuania. The publication provides them with the opportunity to gain a more detailed understanding of Lithuania’s science and research system, research expertise, the achievements of its scientists, and opportunities for collaboration.
